Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games
Olex supplied approximately 10.5km of Versolex flexible industrial cable for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. The cable was used to provide power to 72 giant metallic fish that were positioned along the iconic Yarra River and lit up each evening during the Games.
Olex worked closely with the M2006 Technical Directors Team for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies during the specification phase as the cable requirements for this project were very particular.
“We needed a reliable cable that was both flexible and submersible as the cable was connected to each pontoon and then back to distribution boards on the banks of the Yarra,” said Melbourne 2006 Corporations’ Technical Director of Events, Shannon Gobbel. “We were staging a show that was to be broadcast to millions worldwide so we had to be confident in our choice of cable and Olex were able to provide us with that.”
Southern Cross Electrical Engineering (SCEE)
Olex supplied Southern Cross Electrical Engineering with approximately $3 million of cable for the HIsmelt Kwinana Direct Iron Smelting Project. The project, which was completed in early 2005, involved a major expansion of the existing pilot plant in Kwinana to enable the facility to produce large quantities of high quality pig iron.
The cable supplied for this project consisted mainly of black power and control cables. Despite the fact this was not a standard Olex product, Olex worked closely with the team at SCEE, and were able to manufacture this cable to the specification required for the project.
“SCEE were extremely happy with Olex’s ability to manufacture non standard products, particularly for such a large project,” said SCEE Australian Operations Manager, Simon Buchhorn. This, in addition to Olex’s reputation of superior service and responsiveness were driving factors in SCEE’s decision to use Olex cables.
