Olex completes major Sri Lankan project
24 Jul 2006
Olex Australia successfully completed a major infrastructure project on a design & build basis in Colombo, Sri Lanka recently. Olex’ project management and engineering expertise, utilising the services of local civil contractors, facilitated the successful completion of this major turnkey project.
Olex’ project brief under the Greater Colombo Grid Substation Project – Lot B was to extend the 132kV power supply system and optical fibre communication system in the Colombo area. This was achieved by constructing new 132 kV cable circuits and OF communication links between the existing Kolonnawa and Pannipitiya Grid Substations. This new link comprised the establishment of four 132 kV underground cable circuits and the associated optical fibre cable circuits between the above substations via three new grid substations at Maradana, Havelock Town and Dehiwala in Colombo.
Olex’ involvement in the project was extensive. As part of the works, Olex undertook the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the four circuits, which ran between:
- Kolonnawa substation and Maradana substation
- Maradana substation and Havelock Town substation
- Havelock Town substation and Dehiwala substation
- Dehiwala substation and Pannipitiya substation
The project required almost 80 km of cable, made up of more than 45 km’s of 1000mm2 lead sheath high voltage cable and approximately 35 km’s of 800mm2 copper lead sheath high voltage cables. These cables were manufactured at the Olex plant in Tottenham, Victoria.
While Olex managed the project, local labour was also used during the project. This was an important element of the project, as it enabled Olex to train and develop the skills of personnel in Colombo for future projects. A project of this size had never been undertaken before and as such, the locals gained an immense knowledge from their involvement in the project.
With a proven track record in supplying international markets, Olex is proud to be one of the few fully independent international cable suppliers trading today.
